Chronic absenteeism remains a challenge for Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of the school days in 2024, according to data from the Georgia Department of Education. To address this, GaDOE introduced a new statewide initiative that features a real-time attendance dashboard, a public awareness program, and targeted support to high-need districts.
In 2025, state lawmakers updated Georgia’s attendance laws to prohibit expulsion solely for absenteeism. The legislation also implemented revised reporting standards and connected with alternative diploma programs.
By 2026, Georgia had achieved a student-to-teacher ratio of around 14:1, which outperforms the national average of 15:1.
