As the National Safe Boating Council observed Safe Boating Week from May 17 to 23, 2025, the Henry County Water Authority (HCWA) was recognized for its local efforts in promoting water safety. The Georgia Chapter of the Public Risk Management Association (PRIMA) awarded HCWA with the Georgia Public Risk Management Entity Achievement Award for their outstanding risk management program.

Tamara Woodie, HCWA Director of Human Resources and Risk Management, emphasized that safety and risk management are integral to their operations. “They (safety and risk management) are built into everything we do,” she stated. The Authority manages two water treatment plants, three water reclamation facilities, numerous miles of water and sewer lines, as well as five drinking water reservoirs.

During Safe Boating Week, HCWA employees participated in “Wear Your Lifejacket to Work” Day to promote water safety. The award highlighted HCWA’s commitment to both internal and community safety through public education and initiatives targeting customers with reservoir use permits.

The Reservoirs and Land Management office at Cubihatcha Outdoor Education Center oversees around 11,000 acres of green space and critical infrastructure. Patrols are conducted by three HCWA Rangers along with Safety and Risk Unit Supervisor Todd Brackin. They collaborate with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and Henry County Public Safety during emergencies.

HCWA’s praised initiatives included enhanced patrols on reservoirs, partnerships with Georgia DNR for improved water safety, and Life Jacket Loaner Stations around key reservoir locations. Todd Brackin noted a positive change in public awareness about water safety since these measures were implemented.

The PRIMA Award evaluators also commended HCWA’s educational outreach targeting over 400 students in local schools on water safety knowledge. “We are deeply honored that our water safety efforts have been recognized by Georgia PRIMA,” said Woodie. She stressed that these initiatives aim to protect neighbors’ well-being while ensuring safe enjoyment of reservoirs.

Akilah Herring from the Customer Service Department participated in “Wear Your Lifejacket to Work” Day during Safe Boating Week. Rhonda Lewis and Tina Mansell also joined this initiative while assisting customers.
