Hicks Elementary School reports 7 Asian students enrolled for 2024-25

Seven Asian students were enrolled at Hicks Elementary School during the 2024-25 school year, a 56.3% decline from the prior year, according to the Georgia Department of Education.

Hicks Elementary recorded a total enrollment of 746 students for the 2024-25 year. Asian students accounted for 1% of this total, representing the smallest demographic group at the school.

The school is part of the Rockdale County School District, which is headquartered in Conyers.

Out of 18 schools in the district, Rockdale County High School saw the largest Asian student enrollment in 2024-25, with 45 students.

The National Center for Education Statistics reports public school enrollment in Georgia as approximately 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander.

Chronic absenteeism continues to be a significant concern for Georgia schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing at least 10% of days in 2024, Georgia Department of Education data shows. The department launched a statewide effort—which includes an attendance dashboard, awareness campaign, and targeted district support—to improve daily attendance.

Legislation passed in 2025 by Georgia lawmakers updated school attendance laws to prohibit expulsion based solely on absenteeism and introduced new data reporting rules, aligning with alternative diploma pathways for students.

By 2026, Georgia’s average student-teacher ratio stood at about 14:1, outperforming the national average of 15:1.
