Eight Asian students were enrolled at Live Oak Elementary School for the 2024-25 school year, matching the previous year’s count, according to the Georgia Department of Education.
Reports indicate a total enrollment of 859 students at Live Oak Elementary in 2024-25. Asian students made up 1% of the student body, accounting for the school’s smallest demographic group.
The school is part of the Newton County School District, which is headquartered in Covington.
Across Newton County School District’s 22 schools, Eastside High School reported the district’s largest enrollment of Asian students for the 2024-25 school year, with 31 students.
The National Center for Education Statistics showed public school enrollment in Georgia as about 36.4% Black, 35.9% white, 18.1% Hispanic, 4% Asian, 4.6% multiracial, 0.2% American Indian or Alaska Native, and 0.1% Pacific Islander.
Georgia continues to face high levels of chronic absenteeism in schools after the pandemic, with 20.7% of students missing 10% or more days in 2024, based on Georgia Department of Education data. Efforts by GaDOE to address the issue include a real-time attendance dashboard, greater community awareness, and additional assistance for the districts most in need.
In 2025, state lawmakers updated Georgia’s attendance policies, outlawing expulsion on the grounds of absenteeism alone. The legislation also brings new reporting duties and aligns with graduation pathways for students outside the conventional system.
Georgia maintained an average student-to-teacher ratio of around 14:1 as of 2026, better than the national average of 15:1, according to state and national records.
