State Representative Matt Reeves from Duluth has been appointed by House Speaker Jon Burns to lead the House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Insurance Rates. The committee will focus on evaluating insurance rate-setting practices in Georgia.

“Georgians deserve an insurance system that is fair, transparent and accountable,” stated Rep. Reeves. He expressed gratitude to Speaker Burns for forming the committee and appointing him as chair. “During the 2025 legislative session, the Georgia General Assembly worked to pass tort reform, and this study committee will be an extension of that to work to reduce predatory insurance practices.”

The committee aims to scrutinize various aspects of the insurance industry, including rate-setting practices, profit margins, claims processing, and regulatory compliance. This examination seeks to ensure that businesses and consumers in Georgia are not subjected to unjustified rate increases.

Speaker Burns also named several other members to the study committee: State Representatives Eddie Lumsden, Shaw Blackmon, Majority Whip James Burchett, Noel Williams Jr., Todd Jones, Emory Dunahoo, Michelle Au, Bruce Williamson, Trey Kelley, Minority Leader Carolyn Hugley, Jaclyn Ford, Karen Mathiak, Majority Leader Chuck Efstration and Joseph Gullett.

The findings of this committee will result in a report with specific recommendations aimed at protecting consumers from unfair pricing practices in Georgia’s insurance market.
