Every “first” of Michael Penix Jr.’s opening day of training camp as the Falcons’ starting quarterback involved Kyle Pitts. His first throw in the 11-on-11 work was a 25-yard completion to Pitts. In his press conference, Penix mentioned, “You see we got KP the ball today,” and added, “There’s going to be a lot of that.”
Penix highlighted his connection with Pitts not only through passes but also by referring to him as his “golfing partner.” They have been meeting regularly during the offseason for practice and golf.
Penix noted Pitts’ hard work over the summer, saying, “He’s had a great summer and I know he said he feels really good coming into camp. I can see it.”
This year is significant for Pitts as it’s his final year on his rookie contract. Raheem Morris commented, “I think Kyle has been a talking point for all of us,” emphasizing attempts to replicate Pitts’ historic rookie season.
Pitts made history in his rookie year by breaking records like Tony Gonzalez’s franchise record for most receiving yards in a single season by a tight end. However, since a knee injury in 2022, questions about his value have increased.
With new teammates like Drake London and Bijan Robinson joining the offense, Pitts has something to prove this season. He stated, “I am here. I am where my feet are,” expressing excitement for the upcoming year.
In their discussions this summer, Penix and Pitts focused on being assets to each other and the team. Pitts remarked on being ready and eager to perform with his teammates.
Morris expressed satisfaction with what he’s seen from Pitts this offseason: “The communication between him and Zac Robinson is at a very high level right now.”
As training camp progresses, early signs show that Pitts is aligned with Penix, which bodes well for their collaboration this season.
“I am really fired up,” Morris concluded about seeing what they can achieve together after spending time working together in the offseason.
