Rep. Mike Collins, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Georgia’s 10th district, took to social media to reflect on the historic events of June 6, 1944, marking a pivotal moment in World War II. In a series of tweets posted on June 6, 2025, he recounted the details and significance of Operation Overlord.

In his first tweet at 13:11:37 UTC, Rep. Collins described the tense atmosphere leading up to the operation. “As the final decision loomed,” he noted that weather reports were unfavorable and timing was uncertain. However, General Eisenhower made the decisive call before dawn on June 5, giving the go-ahead for Operation Overlord and addressing troops with encouragement as they prepared for what he called “the Great Crusade.”

The following tweet at 13:11:38 UTC detailed the commencement of D-Day itself. On June 6, nearly 160,000 Allied troops launched an assault on a fortified stretch of Normandy’s coastline spanning fifty miles. The operation was supported by a formidable force consisting of 5,000 ships and 13,000 aircraft. This marked the beginning of Europe’s liberation from Axis control.

In his third tweet at 13:11:39 UTC, Rep. Collins highlighted the role played by airborne divisions during this critical phase of WWII. Airborne troops dropped into France during early hours to capture strategic bridges and roads behind enemy lines—an effort involving over 23,000 paratroopers from countries including the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada—to set up for beach assaults.

Mike Collins has been serving in Congress since replacing Jody Hice in 2023 after earning his BA from Georgia State University in 1990.
