City Council Candidate Filing to Open Jan. 19 through Feb. 18

9

City of Denton issued the following announcement on Jan. 12

Denton residents wishing to run for City Council in the upcoming City of Denton municipal elections will be able to file an application to be on the ballot between Jan. 19 and Feb. 18, 2022. On May 7, 2022, qualified residents of Denton will elect members to the Denton City Council for At-Large Places 5, 6, and 7 (Mayor).

During the filing period, interested persons may file their candidate packet with the City Secretary’s Office Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The City Secretary will then review the application to ensure that the candidate meets the following, and any additional, requirements:

  • Shall have domiciled for at least one year preceding his or her election within the corporate limits of Denton, shall continuously be domiciled within the corporate limits of Denton, and as follows when seeking office for the particular seat noted below:
    1. If running for Mayor (Place 7), may reside anywhere in the city for at least one year preceding his or her election and throughout the term of office.
    2. If running for At-Large Place 5, must reside in Districts 1 or 2 for at least one year preceding his or her election and throughout the term of office.
    3. If running for At-Large Place 6, must reside in Districts 3 or 4 for at least one year preceding his or her election and throughout the term of office.
Residents may also visit the Locate My Council District webpage to determine in which City Council district they reside. The City Council approved new district boundaries on Dec. 14, 2021.

Because these are at-large seats on the City Council, voters will be able to cast a ballot for all three of the seats during the May 7 election, regardless of what Council district they reside in.
