Tri-Cities High School won its second Georgia High School Association (GHSA) State 5A basketball championship March 10. They defeated Eagle’s Landing 67 to 59. With its second state championship win since 2019, the team sealed its place in history by bringing the East Point community another victory.
“Congratulations, state champions,” said Fulton County Schools (FCS) Board Vice President and District 6 Representative Kimberly Dove. “We are so proud of the accomplishment of our athletes and our school.” Dove and District 3 Board Representative Gail Dean joined the community in a celebration parade for the team hosted by East Point Mayor Deanna Ingraham down East Point Street, culminating at city hall.
Proud Principal Dr. Ethel Lett said: “I am immensely proud of the players, coaches, and support staff on such a monumental win. Coach Forts consistently inspires his players to be student-athletes who represent the school well and who exemplify the Bulldog PRIDE expected of all students. Our student-athletes consistently displayed the grit, tenacity, athleticism, and sportsmanship necessary to secure a record-breaking season leading to the title of Region 5A champions and ultimately 5A State champions!”
To secure the win, the team had to overcome many obstacles, including a COVID-19 outbreak within the team in December, and multiple injuries that cost over 50 combined missed games from valuable team contributors. Forts, who was named Class 5A Coach of the Year, points quickly to his team as heroes.
“Kory Mincy was the Most Valuable Player of the championship game with 19 points, 4 rebounds, 7 assists and 4 steals,” Forts said. “Simeon Cottle was named the Class 5A Player of the Year and the Metro Player of the Year. Cottle led the 5A division in scoring this year with 25 points per game.”
Coach Forts was excited to focus a positive light last year on the East Point, Hapeville and College Park communities Tri-Cities serves with his first championship. He believes the second win will put a positive light on Tri-Cities High School. “It means that great things are consistently happening at Tri-Cities and that it’s a great place to be for young men and women who dream of success on the basketball court,” Forts said.
