Q2: 55 life sentenced inmates at S.M.U. Special Management Unit in Butts County

13edited

There were 55 life sentenced inmates incarcerated at S.M.U. Special Management Unit in Butts County in the second quarter of 2023, according to the Georgia Department of Corrections.

Kevin Ponda Bentley and Mark Steven Heald were the oldest at approximately 65-years-old.

Kevonta Daykwon Daniels, a roughly 20-year-old man, was the youngest man sentenced to serve life in prison.

Georgia imprisons a higher percentage of its population than any other democracy in the world, locking up 968 per 100,000 people.

State spends between $25,000 and $30,000 on average annually on incarcerated individuals.

Georgia’s crime rate increased in recent years, leading to higher incarceration numbers and more taxpayer money spent on prisoners. Accusations of mistreatment of inmates, riots, deadly assaults on inmates, attacks on correctional officers, and concerns about the poor physical condition of the facilities are a continual problem in Georgia.

Inmates are often transferred around the state of Georgia, which can create data irregularities.
