State Representative Rhonda Taylor (D-Conyers) has highlighted the impact of Senate Bill 632 on seniors in Rockdale County, particularly focusing on the increase in the senior homestead exemption to $50,000 within the Rockdale County School District. Rep. Taylor, who sponsored the bill in the House during the 2022 legislative session, emphasized the significance of the legislation in providing relief to seniors in the area.
In a statement, Rep. Taylor expressed her dedication to supporting Rockdale seniors, stating, “It is well known that I have worked for several years at the Capitol to give seniors in Rockdale County some relief on their property taxes.” She acknowledged the collaborative effort that led to the passing of the resolution, noting the importance of the data provided by the Rockdale County Tax Commissioner’s Office.
According to data from the Tax Commissioner's office, the impact of the 2023 senior exemption was substantial. Seniors in Rockdale benefited from a reduction of $1.62 million in school taxes in 2023 due to the increase in the exemption. Furthermore, the number of seniors who were not assessed any school tax increased significantly from 128 to 349 as a result of the legislation.
Reflecting on the achievement, Rep. Taylor expressed pride in the outcome, stating, “I am very proud of this accomplishment. It took some time to get it done, but it was well worth the time and energy spent.” She emphasized that Senate Bill 632 represents a starting point rather than a conclusion, expressing her aspiration to eventually exempt seniors over 70 years of age from paying any school board taxes.
As the impact of Senate Bill 632 continues to benefit seniors in Rockdale County, Rep. Taylor encourages individuals to seek further information on the bill for a better understanding of its implications.
