FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- The Atlanta Falcons will open the 2024 NFL season with a significantly revamped roster and coaching staff, hoping to build on an optimistic outlook as they face Pittsburgh in their season opener. A major focus is on the quarterback position, where Kirk Cousins will debut in red and black.

The team has faced challenges at quarterback since the departure of Matt Ryan. Cousins, known for his durability and consistency, aims to stabilize the offense. Since becoming a full-time starter in 2015, he has missed only one game due to injury last season. Over this period, Cousins leads the NFL in passing yards (36,441), ranks second in completions (3,225), and is second in touchdown passes (252) among active players.

Head coach Raheem Morris emphasized the importance of high-level quarterback play during his introductory press conference: "When you get those guys that are elite processors... it makes you excited to go out there and find those things." Cousins' accuracy is notable; he holds the third-best completion percentage among active players since 2015 (67.6%) and has excelled in timing plays within the offense.

Cousins has thrown for more yards (19,007) and touchdowns (123) than any other quarterback on "in rhythm" throws since 2016. His performance under head coach Kevin O'Connell with the Minnesota Vikings is particularly relevant as Falcons offensive coordinator Zac Robinson previously worked with O'Connell.

Despite missing nine games last season, Cousins ranked highly in several metrics for "in rhythm" throws from 2022-2023. Through eight games in 2023, he was second in passing yards (2,331) and touchdowns (18), completing 68.5% of his passes.

On defense, significant additions have been made following concerns about pass rush capabilities. Bud Dupree and Calais Campbell led a marked improvement last year but are no longer with the team. In August, Atlanta traded for four-time Pro Bowler Matthew Judon to bolster their pass rush. Judon has been highly productive since entering the league in 2016 and brings versatility to Atlanta's defense.

Head coach Morris commented on Judon's addition: "Anytime you can add a dog to your group... that is exciting."

The secondary also saw enhancements with the acquisition of four-time All-Pro safety Justin Simmons. Simmons leads the league with 30 interceptions since entering in 2016 and joins Jessie Bates III, who tied for most interceptions last season en route to his first Pro Bowl nod.

Morris highlighted their skills: "The unique and great ball skills that they have makes those two guys special."

As Week 1 approaches, these new additions aim to help Atlanta return to playoff contention.
