The Henry County Water Authority (HCWA), located in McDonough, Georgia, continues its collaboration with Southern Crescent Technical College to offer an engaging Summer Internship Program for rising high school juniors and seniors. This initiative allows participants to earn college credits and gain practical work experience within the water profession sector.

Running from June 2 to July 25, the program splits participants' time between Southern Crescent Technical College classes (two days a week) and various departments within the HCWA (three days a week). An Information Session is scheduled for April 17 at 5:30 p.m. at the SCTC Henry County Center. Prospective interns and their parents are encouraged to attend.

The previous year saw 14 students engaged in HCWA operations, learning about water quality management, infrastructure maintenance, and public outreach. The program now encompasses fields such as water and wastewater treatment, IT, reservoirs and grounds, and purchasing and inventory, offering paid part-time positions.

Each intern is paired with an HCWA mentor to gain deeper insights into the profession. Interns are paid $14 per hour with potential financial aid for SCTC courses, with a minimum age requirement of 16 years old.

"In addition to hosting a Summer Internship Program to recruit students interested in career opportunities within the water profession, the HCWA staff also is involved in Work-Based Learning with Henry County Schools, as well as Career Fairs at local high schools," said Tamara Woodie, HCWA's Director of HR and Risk Management. "Our summer interns will learn essential life skills as well, while getting a deeper understanding of the critical role water infrastructure plays in our daily lives.”

The program, now in its third year, offers limited spots. Interested students are advised to apply promptly, with additional information available online or via email.

Last year, interns celebrated program completion with key HCWA and SCTC personnel. Participants like Denise Wiggins worked in the Tussahaw Plant water quality lab, and Jadon Hermit gained knowledge in infrastructure maintenance. Nicholas Howard participated in grounds maintenance at the Cubihatcha Center.
