The Atlanta Falcons have released veteran defensive tackle Grady Jarrett, the team announced on Monday. This development was initially reported by NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Arthur Blank, the owner of the Falcons, issued a statement praising Jarrett's contributions to both the team and the city. "Over the past decade, Grady has exemplified true professionalism, leadership and humility while representing both the Falcons and the city of Atlanta," Blank said. He continued to highlight Jarrett's impact as a player and role model: "His tenacity and love for those around him have inspired not only me but teammates, staff and generations of Falcons' fans alike."

Blank also acknowledged Jarrett's commitment to community service, noting his nominations for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award. Despite this difficult decision, Blank expressed gratitude for Jarrett's contributions: "On behalf of myself, the entire Falcons organization and the city of Atlanta, we honor and thank Grady for his incredible contributions both on and off the field."

Following his release from Atlanta, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Jarrett signed a three-year contract with the Chicago Bears worth $43.5 million, with $28.5 million guaranteed. The Bears also reportedly signed former Falcons center Drew Dalman to a lucrative deal.

By releasing Jarrett, Atlanta saves $16.25 million in cap space according to Over the Cap. This move comes after signing left tackle Jake Matthews to an extension. Although ESPN's Jeremy Fowler noted that Atlanta offered Jarrett a new deal, he chose to explore other opportunities due to confidence in his market value.

Jarrett joined the Falcons as a fifth-round pick in 2015 and quickly became known as a key player on their defense. His standout performance includes 21.5 sacks over four seasons and multiple Pro Bowl selections.

As free agency approaches on March 12th at 4 pm ET, teams can begin negotiations with players' representatives during a two-day period starting March 10th.
