The Atlanta Falcons have reportedly reached an agreement on a contract extension with left tackle Jake Matthews. This information comes from NFL Network's Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport.
The extension is said to be for two years, valued at $45 million, with $38 million fully guaranteed between 2025 and 2026. News of this agreement emerged late Sunday night, marking the Falcons' second extension before the official start of the 2025 league year on Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET. Previously, long snapper Liam McCullough signed his own contract extension last Thursday.
Matthews had two years remaining on his current contract, which was last extended in 2022 for three years. He was originally set to become a free agent in 2027; however, this new deal extends that timeline to 2029. By then, Matthews will have completed his 15th season in the NFL; he concluded his 11th season in 2024.
Selected by the Falcons as the No. 6 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft, Matthews has started in all but one of a possible 180 games since joining the team. The only game he missed was during his rookie season due to a high-ankle sprain sustained during his debut.
On November 26, 2023 – during a Week 12 victory against the New Orleans Saints – Matthews surpassed former Falcons quarterback Matt Ryan for most consecutive starts in franchise history. Ryan's record began in 2009 and ended in 2019 with a total of 154 starts. Matthews' streak began in 2014 and continues into the current year with a count of 178 consecutive starts.
Jake Matthews is currently aged 33 and hails from Missouri City, Texas.
